What makes Muay Thai different from other martial arts, kickboxing, and boxing?
Muay Thai is called the art of 8 limbs because there are 8 striking points used in fighting: punches, elbows, knees, and shins. This makes Muay Thai much more dynamic than boxing or kickboxing which focus on the hands and the feet. Muay Thai also utilizes the concept of maximum power behind striking instead of the complex techniques of other martial arts. Power and the repetition of basics is favored. Muay Thai is a combat sport so the techniques are developed and honed in full contact competition. Muay Thai’s unique element is the clinch. While the clinch is not allowed or its use limited in boxing and kickboxing it is often favored for striking in Muay Thai.
What kind of Muay Thai are you teaching? A lot of schools claim to teach Muay Thai but it always looks like kickboxing to me.
One way to judge a Muay Thai program is to note what techniques they do and don’t teach. For example, clinching is an essential part of Muay Thai and must be a part of any true Muay Thai program. We teach the clinch along with many other traditional techniques that come directly from the Thailand Muay Thai gyms.
Head coach Eric made a choice to leave behind the pressure of what we call "meathead" gyms, We saw many potential careers compromised and many people pushed to compete at a time or in a venue that was inappropriate for them. We want people to enjoy Muay Thai, not have their bodies and minds wrecked by it. That said, we do work toward every individual Nak Muay's goal. If you work with us and hone your skills and find you want to test them in the ring, we can mentor you toward that goal.
We do not have sparring for Little Nak Muays or Junior Nak Muays, as we feel that to get the full benefit of any combat sport for a young person there should be no fear of getting hit. There is not value from teaching sparring at this age, and we feel it is counter to their healthy development to expose them to direct violence.
Our programs do not incorporate sparring, but we do have accommodations for Nak Muays who are working on proficiency or training for competition to be able to spar. This is not available to all Nak Muays. Our head coach assesses every Nak Muay for this opportunity.
We love training new Nak Muays. If you are 80 years old and spent your life on the couch, we will work with you. We are about empowerment, not intimidation or accommodating tough guys.
